Lichtzoekers

Street art sculptures escaping the dark

by Senne Dehandschutter

Rage, rage

Awkward postures, precarious positions, and the fear of falling. Yet they seem to climb, searching for light and a view. Dreaming of what lies beyond the blind wall or the high rooftop. It is the dream of a wondrous horizon, knowing that place may not truly exist.

A rebellion too, against the dark shadow of our time. To put it in the words of the poet Dylan Thomas: "Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

What's next?

From our Lichtzoeker studio, we will continue to create and install new sculptures, one or two each month. A silent spectacle woven through the city. First against the backdrop of beautiful, if sometimes grim, Brussels, and later in other cities too.

Follow our journey

I hesitated: no Lichtzoekers on social media. Only to be seen in real life. Eyes looking upward, away from the little screen. But the likes are too tempting.

Nominate someone for a Lichtzoeker sculpture

Do you know someone who deserves their own Lichtzoeker sculpture? They don't need to have a catwalk body, and posing is completely free. Send us their name, a few photos, and tell us why you think they're a Lichtzoeker. Email us at send@sennedehandschutter.com

A small warning: creating a Lichtzoeker takes some dedication. We make a plaster cast of the body, which means standing still in one pose for a while. It can get a bit messy, and the model wears only underwear so we can make an honest cast of the body.

A Lichtzoeker on your facade?

Do you live in Brussels and want a free sculpture on your facade? Or do you live elsewhere, in a remarkable urban location? Send an email to send@sennedehandschutter.com
